The question is not whether porcelain as a material is slippery. The question is whether the specific tile you are choosing carries the correct finish and slip-resistance rating for where it is going to be used.

Why Porcelain Gets a Bad Reputation for Slipperiness

The polished and glossy formats mostly used in kitchens, bathrooms and showrooms are manufactured primarily for appearance and ease of cleaning, with a thickness of more or less 9mm. 

The polished process creates a smooth and reflective finish that provides very low friction. On wet bathroom floors or rain-wet entrance steps, it is a genuine slip hazard. 

Outdoor Porcelain Paving

Porcelain paving slabs for outdoors are manufactured differently. They have a minimum thickness of 16mm and more, with deliberate texture. 

They are tested to meet specific slip resistance standards for wet weather conditions. It is engineered to perform in British weather, not just to look good in a showroom. 

The slip risk with porcelain is not about the material. It is about whether the tile has been correctly specified for its environment. 

The Ratings That Actually Matter: R-Rating and PTV 

Two ratings matter the most when it comes to slip resistance in the UK. 

  1. The R-Rating (DIN 51130 Ramp Test

The R-ratings are determined by a ramp test: A person walks on the tile surface while it is angled upwards, with oil applied to stimulate contaminated conditions. The steeper the angle before slipping, the higher the R-rating.

For any outdoor paving in the UK, R11 is the minimum you should accept. Anything below that rating has not been designed for external wet conditions. Check the desired product specification to see the R-rating, or ask for the datasheet before ordering. 

  1. The PTV — Pendulum Test Value (UK Standard) 

The PTV is the slip resistance measure used by the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE). It is measured using a swinging rubber slider that simulates the motion of a foot on a wet surface. The result is a number, and the threshold is clear:

A well-specified outdoor porcelain paving slab will typically show a PTV of 40–50, comfortably above the 36 threshold. When checking a product's PTV, always confirm the figure quoted is the wet result; dry PTV values are always higher and tell you very little about real-world performance in rain. 

R-Rating vs PTV: Which One Should You Check? 

Both where possible. They measure different things:

  • R-ratings are mostly relevant for outdoor paving, commercial kitchens, and heavily contaminated environments. It is always listed on outdoor porcelain product pages from reputable paving suppliers. 

  • PTV is more relevant for bathrooms, shower areas and wet rooms, particularly for barefoot use. It is the measure the HSE uses for compliance assessment. 

For a porch or patio, check the R-rating first. For a bathroom or wet room, check the PTV. If a supplier cannot provide either figure for a floor tile, do not buy that tile.

Which Porcelain Finishes Are Slippery & Which Are Safe

The porcelain tile finish is one of the biggest factors in how slippery a porcelain tile is. Here is a clear breakdown:

Polished Porcelain

It has the highest slip risk in outdoor spaces. The polishing process removes all the texture, leaving a mirror-like surface that provides no grip when wet. 

Keep the polished porcelain off the bathroom floors, kitchen floors and anything outdoors. However, you can use it on walls. Or on dry indoor floors where water will not reach. 

Lappato and Satin Finishes 

It sits between the glossy and matt finishes. They have a certain sheen but are not fully reflective. They have better grip than polished porcelain tiles but are not reliably safe for wet floor areas. 

They are best used on low-traffic indoor floors or walls. 

Matt Porcelain 

They are significantly better in slip resistance than any polished or lappato finish. The surface texture creates friction. Most matt porcelain floor tiles are somewhat acceptable for domestic floor use. 

However, matt is not automatically safe. That is why it is important to check the PTV or R-rating for wet area applications. Matt is a finish description, not a safety certification. 

Textured and Structured Porcelain 

It is the most slip-resistant of all porcelain finishes. The surface profiles replicating the stone, slate and wood grain create a consistent friction even in wet weather conditions.  

This is the standard finish for outdoor paving, bathroom floors, and any surface that will see water regularly. R11-rated paving falls into this category 

Bush-hammered Porcelain

 Mechanically textured finish of hammered porcelain creates a heavily structured surface. These paving slabs are used in commercial and high-risk environments. 

PTV values of 40+ are typical. Overkill for a domestic patio, but relevant for pool surrounds or external steps. 

Porcelain vs Natural Stone: Which Is More Slippery

It depends on the tiles being compared, but as a general rule:

Outdoor Porcelain Paving

Porcelain paving for outdoor use is textured with an R11 rating, which performs equally or better than natural stone for slip resistance. 

It is a manufactured surface texture that is consistent across every slab, whereas natural stone varies in texture with each slab. 

Natural Slate Paving

The riven slate paving is one of the most slip-resistant natural stone options. The uneven surface creates exceptional grip even when wet. It competes directly with textured porcelain. 

Sandstone and Limestone 

Particularly in smooth and honed finishes, sandstone and limestone can be slippery when wet and require sealing to reduce water absorption. 

A sealed sandstone slab does not offer the same consistent grip as an R11 porcelain tile. 

Granite Paving Slabs

In a polished finish, granite has huge slip risk, same as polished porcelain. In a flamed or bush-hammered finish, granite paving is highly slip-resistant. 

In short, choose:

R11 porcelain paving slabs, if durability, slip safety, and low maintenance are a priority.

Natural stone, if you prefer authenticity, specify a high textured finish for outdoor use and do not mind the annual maintenance. 

Can You Make Slippery Porcelain Tiles Safer

  1. Anti-slip Coating and Treatments

Products like anti-slip sealant or nano coating treatments improve grip on smooth porcelain by creating a microscopic texture in the surface. 

They are most effective on lightly polished or satin tiles. They do not bring heavily polished tile to an R11 standard, but can meaningfully reduce slip risk. Reapply the sealant every 1-2 years. 

  1. Anti-slip Tape and Strips 

It is one of the most immediate solutions for high-risk transition areas and steps. Use self-adhesive strips rated for outdoor use. 

Not a visual solution, but it is a priority for risers and step noses where safety is a priority and appearance is secondary. You can keep it on until you find a more permanent solution. 

  1. Anti-slip Mats and Rugs (indoor)

A non-slip backed mat at a threshold handles wet shoes and umbrella drips in enclosed porches, entrance halls, and covered outdoor areas. It is a solution if you do not want to work on the tile itself.

Ensure that the mat has a non-slip backing; a standard rug on polished porcelain is still a slip hazard. 

The honest answer: None of these options is a substitute for choosing the correct tile in the first place. If you have polished porcelain on an outdoor surface that has become a slip hazard, the long-term solution is replacement with a correctly rated tile. Anti-slip treatments buy time; they do not solve the underlying specification problem.

Porch Tile Installation: What to Get Right for Slip Safety 

The slip resistance rating of the tile is only maintained if it is laid correctly. Two installation points directly affect safety:

  • Level Substrate: An uneven surface causes individual tiles to rock or lip against each other, creating trip edges. For any external installation, the finished surface must achieve a tolerance of no more than 3mm in 3 metres.

  • Falls and Drainage: External paving must be laid with a minimum 1:80 fall away from the building (approximately 12mm per metre). Standing water on a porch or patio surface significantly increases slip risk even on R11-rated tiles.

  • Grout Joint Width: Use 3–5mm joints with a flexible exterior grout (CG2WA rated) on all external paving. Tight joints (1–2mm) will crack under thermal movement and allow water to pool in the resulting gaps.

All external paving slabs require at least 16mm thickness with full frost and water resistance, with a minimum R11 slip rating. 

Is matt porcelain always slip-resistant?

Not automatically. Matt describes a visual finish, not a safety rating. Most matt porcelain floor tiles offer significantly better slip resistance than polished tiles, but the specific PTV or R-rating still needs to be checked for wet area and external applications. Always verify the rating on the technical datasheet, not just the finish description.

How do I know if a porcelain tile is safe for my bathroom floor?

Check the tile's wet PTV value; it should be 36 or above. For shower trays and wet rooms where you may be barefoot, also look for a DIN 51097 Class B or C classification, which confirms the tile has been tested specifically for barefoot wet use. Avoid any polished or high-gloss porcelain on a bathroom floor regardless of the finish name.
