Kandla Grey started life as a natural sandstone quarried around Kandla in Rajasthan, India — a cool, silvery grey with subtle tonal movement that flatters almost every UK brick and render. Its popularity is why the colourway now exists twice: as the quarried stone itself, and as a manufactured porcelain that reproduces the look with porcelain's low-maintenance behaviour. Same family, two materials — and choosing between them is the only real decision on this page.
Kandla Grey Porcelain is a 900×600mm slab at 20mm calibrated thickness with an anti-slip textured finish. Near-zero water absorption means it doesn't stain easily, never needs sealing, and holds its colour; every slab in a batch matches. Kandla Grey Sandstone is the genuine article: quarried stone with real slab-to-slab tonal variation, in four finishes — natural riven, sandblast, tumbled (22mm calibrated) and honed & sawn (22mm calibrated) — plus 100×100mm cobble setts (roughly 40–60mm thick) for edging, borders and driveway details.
The porcelain range is supplied in an anti-slip textured finish — the grip is fired into the slab surface, not coated on, so it can't wear away. Slip resistance is specified per product rather than per material: check the individual product listing for the finish and any published slip rating of the exact pack you're ordering, and see R-ratings explained for what the numbers mean. On the sandstone side, the riven and sandblast textures give natural grip; honed surfaces are smoother underfoot. Two site factors matter as much as the slab: falls that shed water, and keeping algae washed off (cleaning guide).
Both versions lay on the standard build-up — excavation to firm ground, 100mm+ of compacted MOT Type 1 and a full mortar bed with 8–10mm joints — with one porcelain-specific rule: a priming slurry brushed onto the back of every slab, because porcelain is too dense to bond to plain mortar. Both exist in the range. The porcelain is a manufactured 900×600mm, 20mm calibrated slab with batch-consistent colour and no sealing. The sandstone is genuine quarried stone with natural tonal variation, in natural, sandblast, tumbled and honed & sawn finishes.
The porcelain never needs sealing — it is near-non-porous. The natural sandstone is porous and benefits from an impregnating sealer once laid, re-applied every few years.
