Outdoor porcelain needs an exterior-rated joint product — indoor wall-and-floor tile grout will crack and fail in the first freeze-thaw winter. The three families that work are flowable cement-based grouts, brush-in jointing compounds and two-part epoxy mortars. Which is "best" depends on your joint width, the area you're covering and how much working time you want.
Why porcelain changes the grouting question
Porcelain is near-non-porous, so joints — not the slab — are where water tries to get in, and the slab's crisp edges make narrow, consistent joints (5mm and up) the norm. Narrow joints rule out coarse mortars and favour flowable or resin products that fully penetrate. Porcelain's stain resistance also means a stained joint shows worse than it would beside natural stone, so joint stain-resistance is worth paying for.
Option 1: Flowable cement-based grout — best for large areas and narrow joints
Mixed to a pourable slurry and squeegeed across the surface, filling every joint fast. Rapid-setting versions take foot traffic within hours, and this is the standard commercial method for porcelain. Option 2: Brush-in jointing compounds — best for DIY
Air-curing resin-bound sand, supplied ready to use: soak the paving, brush the compound diagonally into the joints, compact, top up and sweep clean. No mixing, no mess, very forgiving. Check minimum joint dimensions on the tub — compounds want a few mm of width and around 20mm of depth, so they suit porcelain laid with 5mm+ joints on a full bed.
Option 3: Two-part epoxy jointing mortar — maximum durability
Resin plus hardener, mixed on site: the hardest-wearing, most stain-proof and effectively waterproof joint, ideal around pools, hot tubs and driveways. Costs the most, cures fast (short working window) and is the least forgiving to clean up — mix small batches and rinse in stages.
What about traditional sand and cement?
A 3:1 sand-cement pointing mortar can joint porcelain, but it's slow against narrow joints, prone to hairline cracking, and the most likely method to stain the face. Choosing a colour
Grey-on-grey is the safe contemporary default (charcoal joints frame lighter slabs like Kandla Grey crisply; natural/buff tones soften the look). Two practical rules: darker joints hide dirt and algae longer, and you should check colour against a dry, cured sample — wet grout always dries lighter.
Do you need to seal the grout?
Epoxy joints: no — they're impermeable. Brush-in compounds: no routine sealing needed. Cementitious grout: optional; a joint sealer can slow staining and algae on shaded patios, but on porcelain paving most people simply pressure-rinse annually instead (see cleaning porcelain paving).
Application rules that save the job
- Joint only after the bedding has cured (24–48 hours) and with a dry forecast for the product's cure window.
- Pre-soak the surface for brush-in and flowable products so residue can't key into the face.
- Fill joints completely — half-filled joints fail from the bottom up.
- Wash off before the film cures; cured residue means a cement-remover job (guide).
- Test textured or riven finishes on a small patch first.
